Blackbird Interactive was founded in 2007 by former Relic Entertainment members who had worked on the original Homeworld games, driven by frustration that THQ “were no longer interested in making more ambitious or different types of strategy game, instead preferring to focus on their established franchises.”39 The studio initially developed a game called Hardware: Shipbreakers, which was designed as a spiritual successor to Homeworld.
When THQ went bankrupt in 2013, Gearbox Software emerged as the highest bidder for the Homeworld franchise, acquiring the IP with stated intentions to “preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games.”40 A deal was subsequently signed at PAX between Gearbox and Blackbird Interactive to transform Hardware into the next official Homeworld game.41 This became Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, released in 2016, which served as both a Homeworld prequel and a proving ground for the team’s capabilities.

The crowdfunding campaign set a symbolic 1.5 million from more than 8,400 backers, generating “the highest donation average in Fig platform history.”1
The investment portion of the Fig campaign was later cancelled following Embracer Group’s acquisition of Gearbox in 2021, with Fig CEO Justin Bailey confirming “no money ever changed hands” regarding the investment component.44 Randy Pitchford, Gearbox studio boss, described the acquisition as “like a rocket booster to our ambitions.”44
Development involved a core team of approximately 40 people at Blackbird Interactive’s Vancouver studio, though the full credits list 848 people with 821 professional roles contributing to the project.8 The studio, which had grown to over 330 employees by the game’s release, implemented a four-day work week partway through development in 2022.42 Chief Creative Officer Rory McGuire reported the results: “It’s been amazing.
